Palm Desert Coffee with the Mayor: Building Community Trust and Safety at Fire Station 33
PALM DESERT, CA — The City of Palm Desert continues its push for transparency and open dialogue, bringing city leaders and local residents together for its monthly "Coffee with the Mayor" event. Held Wednesday at Fire Station 33, the gathering offered a casual, low-stakes environment for the community to connect directly with the people who serve them.
The setting at the fire station allowed residents to see first responders in a different light—not just as emergency workers, but as neighbors engaged in the community's future. For those in attendance, it was a rare chance to ask pressing questions and receive direct answers from the city’s highest leadership.
Prioritizing Public Safety and Infrastructure
During the meeting, Mayor Evan Trubee addressed several key local issues, ranging from ongoing infrastructure improvements to the city's emergency preparedness plans. A major highlight of the conversation was the recent hiring of six additional deputies for the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office, a move intended to bolster local law enforcement and response times.
"The city government does not want to operate in a vacuum," Mayor Trubee told the crowd. "We need to hear from the residents what's front of mind for them. That's the only way we can make our city better and serve the residents better."
Breaking Down Barriers
The event also featured a strong presence from local law enforcement. Riverside County Sheriff's deputies noted that these informal meetings are essential for breaking down barriers between the public and police. By engaging in conversation over coffee, rather than during a stressful call for service, residents and officers can build a foundation of mutual respect and understanding.
Organizers noted that the goal of the series is to humanize the often-complex world of local government. By creating a space where people can "just be relaxed and interact," the city hopes to encourage more residents to contribute their thoughts to the development of Palm Desert.
The city plans to host next month's session at a different local venue, continuing its mission to reach residents in every corner of the community—one cup of coffee at a time.

A troubling history is coming to light in a Palm Desert husband’s death. 65-year old Vicky Kim is accused in the death of her husband — but prosecutors say she had previously faced several domestic violence cases involving him. The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office says it had secured protective orders against Kim before a judge later resolved her cases as misdemeanors, released her from custody and terminated those orders. Now, Kim is expected to be arraigned in connection with her husband’s death. Court records allege the weapon used was a flagpole.
