Desert Hot Springs Animal Shelter Pushes Back Against Allegations of Mistreatment
Allegations of animal mistreatment at the Desert Hot Springs Animal Shelter have spread online this week, prompting a strong response from facility officials. The controversy began after a community member sent a complaint to multiple local agencies and newsrooms, accusing the shelter of maintaining unsafe conditions during the region's extreme desert heat.
The complaint alleged that animals were exposed to triple-digit temperatures without adequate cooling and lacked proper enrichment and exercise. One specific quote in the email claimed that many of the animals would have been better off as strays. Shelter officials, however, argue that stray animals typically arrive in far worse condition—often injured, sick, or malnourished—and that the shelter provides essential medical care and food that the animals would otherwise lack.
Shelter staff pushed back against the claims of inhumane treatment, stating that the facility treats every animal as if it were their own. To combat the rising temperatures, officials noted that misters are automatically activated whenever the heat exceeds 80 degrees. The facility also uses swamp coolers and UV-protective shade cloths on all outdoor kennels to mitigate sun exposure.
In addition to the heat concerns, the city addressed past allegations regarding the use of harsh cleaning chemicals. Officials confirmed that while there were prior incidents of dogs having reactions to a specific chemical, that substance was discontinued and phased out over six months ago.
To ensure proper welfare, shelter management stated that every dog is tracked daily to confirm they are fed, socialized, and monitored. A structured system is in place to ensure that every single dog is moved out of its kennel for exercise and interaction every day.
Despite the current care protocols, the no-kill facility—which currently houses between 80 and 100 dogs—emphasized that community support remains vital as the summer months approach. The shelter is actively seeking donations of blankets, towels, enrichment toys, and treats. Officials are also encouraging the public to assist through volunteering, fostering, and adoption.
