Know Before You Go: Monument Signs, Concrete Pours, and IID Work Slow the Valley This Week

Cathedral City: Center Median Monument Sign Installation
Crews are installing a new monument sign in the center median just east of Date Palm Drive, and the inside lanes in both directions will be shut down during the work. Gunterson says the outside lanes will remain open, so traffic can still get through, just expect it to move a bit slower.
No real detour exists for this one, so your best bet is to plan extra travel time. Work is expected to wrap up by May 29th.
Palm Springs: South Palm Canyon Bridge Project
The South Palm Canyon Bridge Project has been ongoing for a while now, and this week crews are pouring concrete on the east side of the bridge. Flaggers will be out in force as concrete trucks move in and out, and that activity typically takes place in the morning hours. Gunterson says to be extra cautious as you pass through since there will be a lot of added activity in the roadway.
If you'd rather skip the slowdown, take Sunny Dunes or Mesquite up to Belardo Road as an alternate route.
La Quinta: Washington Street IID Work and Highway 111 Updates
IID utility work continues on Washington Street between Avenue 48 and Avenue 47, with changing lane closures affecting northbound traffic. Gunterson says to expect heavier slowdowns during the morning rush. To get around it, take a right onto Avenue 48 and head up to Adams Street or Dune Palms Road. This work is expected to continue for another two to three weeks.
Also on Highway 111 in La Quinta, crews will be reslurry sealing and restriping the stretch from Plaza La Quinta to Washington Street in the eastbound direction. The bike lanes in that area are being removed and the striping is being cleaned up to make the corridor more efficient.
Finally, heads up at the Adams Street and Highway 111 intersection. The outside left turn lane will be closed temporarily while crews conduct a study on whether that second left turn lane can be permanently removed. Expect a slightly different traffic pattern as you approach, so pay attention to signage.

A troubling history is coming to light in a Palm Desert husband’s death. 65-year old Vicky Kim is accused in the death of her husband — but prosecutors say she had previously faced several domestic violence cases involving him. The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office says it had secured protective orders against Kim before a judge later resolved her cases as misdemeanors, released her from custody and terminated those orders. Now, Kim is expected to be arraigned in connection with her husband’s death. Court records allege the weapon used was a flagpole.
