New Details Emerge After Death of Bermuda Dunes Elderly Couple
Friends of a Bermuda Dunes couple found dead inside their home say the months leading up to their deaths were marked by emotional turmoil tied to an elaborate online scam targeting the wife.
Donald Whitaker, 80, and his wife Karen Whitaker, 79, were found dead inside their Bermuda Dunes Country Club home Friday after Riverside County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a welfare check. Authorities say both suffered traumatic injuries, and the case is now being investigated as a homicide. While investigators have released few details about exactly what happened inside the home, friends close to the couple tell NBC Palm Springs Karen Whitaker had become deeply involved in an online scam in which she believed she was communicating with actor Tom Selleck.
According to close friend Joy Miedecke, the scam began after Karen made a Facebook post honoring a friend who had passed away. Miedecke then said the person claiming to be the actor told Karen they had known her late friend, creating what appeared to Karen to be a personal connection. Over time, the conversations allegedly evolved into requests for money through gift cards.
“As the months went on it was more and more money… and she fell completely into it,” Miedecke said.
Friends say Karen allegedly sent thousands of dollars to the scammer over several months.
Miedecke said those close to Karen became increasingly concerned and repeatedly tried to convince her the person she was speaking with was not actually Tom Selleck. Eventually, Adult Protective Services became involved and reportedly visited the Whitakers’ home multiple times.
“Nobody convinced her this was a scam. She would NOT believe it...’” Miedecke recalled.
According to Miedecke, the situation took a devastating emotional toll on Donald Whitaker.
“Her husband was beside himself… full of grief that this was happening,” she said.
Miedecke emphasized that she does not know exactly what happened inside the Whitakers’ home or what led to their deaths, but says she believes the emotional damage caused by the scam deeply impacted the family.
Now, community leaders are using the tragedy as a warning about the growing number of scams targeting older adults across the Coachella Valley.
Assembly-member Greg Wallis has hosted several “Senior Scam Stopper” seminars throughout the desert, aimed at teaching seniors how to recognize warning signs, verify identities online, and avoid common fraud schemes involving social media, text messages, and gift cards. Miedecke says she decided to speak publicly in hopes other families can recognize the dangers before it’s too late.
“I want everybody to understand that these scams are rampant out here in this desert… it is horrible what’s going on,” she said.
She added that scams like this often target elderly people experiencing loneliness or grief and says many victims become emotionally attached to the person communicating with them online.
“This time it’s not just somebody losing their money… what they have lost is their lives,” Miedecke said.
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department has not released details about how the Whitakers died, whether investigators believe there is an ongoing threat to the public, or whether a suspect is being sought.
The homicide investigation remains active.
