California Highway Patrol Launches Statewide Memorial Day Crackdown on Impaired and Unrestrained Drivers
The California Highway Patrol is launching its annual Memorial Day Holiday Enforcement Period on Friday evening, flooding roadways across the state with extra officers to combat reckless driving, seatbelt violations, and driving under the influence. The targeted enforcement operation will officially begin at 6:00 PM on Friday, May 22, 2026, and continue through 11:59 PM on Monday, May 25, 2026. This intensive 78-hour enforcement window coincides with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's annual Click It or Ticket campaign, which heavily emphasizes passenger restraint compliance.
State highway authorities are urging drivers to prioritize safety as holiday congestion surges across California networks. During last year's Memorial Day enforcement campaign, highway patrol officers investigated 22 fatal crashes within their jurisdiction, resulting in the tragic loss of over twenty lives. Disturbingly, nearly half of the vehicle occupants who were killed in those collisions were not wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash. Additionally, officers made more than 1,100 arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs over the same short holiday window.
In a public statement ahead of the weekend, state traffic safety officials stressed that securing a seatbelt is one of the simplest and most effective defense mechanisms available to motorists. Officers will maintain zero-tolerance policies for speeding, distracted driving, and driving while impaired. Law enforcement also encourages passengers and bystanders to assist in keeping roads clear by safely dialing 911 to report any motorists demonstrating erratic or dangerous behavior behind the wheel. Those planning to consume alcohol during the holiday festivities are strictly reminded to secure a designated driver or use rideshare services to ensure they reach their destinations safely.
