Desert Hot Springs Students Honored With Temporary Street Namings

Two students in Desert Hot Springs were honored today with temporary street namings recognizing their academic achievements and leadership within their school communities.

At Mount San Jacinto High School, student Katia Martinez was celebrated for her involvement in student leadership, athletics, and campus activities since enrolling as a junior.

Later in the day, Desert Hot Springs High School valedictorian Joel Ernesto Ruiz was recognized near the school campus. Ruiz, a football player and wrestler, has also participated in programs supporting first-generation college students. He plans to attend University of California San Diego this fall.

“I’m very happy and very excited,” Ruiz said. “It’s something I never imagined I could accomplish, but you just have to push yourself beyond your limits and know that whatever you dream of can be accomplished.”

Officials say the honorary street names will remain in place for one year.
