Ramon Road Bridge Project to Bring Two Years of Construction to a Major Valley Corridor
A major construction project is coming to Ramon Road this fall, and it will reshape one of the Coachella Valley's busiest stretches for the next two years.
The cities of Palm Springs and Cathedral City, partnering with the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, will begin work on the Ramon Road Bridge over the Whitewater River this fall. The project spans from San Luis Rey Drive to Candlewood Drive, a corridor that sees more than 40,000 vehicles a day.
The bridge, built decades ago, no longer meets current seismic standards and gets backed up badly during peak hours. According to officials working on the project, the plan is to widen it from four lanes to six, add dedicated turn lanes, bring the structure up to earthquake and flood resilience standards, and add protected bike lanes, sidewalks, and a connection to CV Link. New landscaping and architectural features on the bridge railing will also mark it as a gateway between the two cities.
For drivers worried about the disruption, officials say two lanes in each direction will stay open throughout construction. The project team also plans to keep business driveways accessible and adjust signal timing to help with traffic flow.
Outreach to businesses along the corridor starts in early June, with community meetings, including two in-person sessions and one virtual, planned for the fall before construction kicks off. Residents and businesses can sign up for construction alerts and updates at ramonroadbridgeproject.com.
Construction is expected to wrap up in December 2028.

A troubling history is coming to light in a Palm Desert husband’s death. 65-year old Vicky Kim is accused in the death of her husband — but prosecutors say she had previously faced several domestic violence cases involving him. The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office says it had secured protective orders against Kim before a judge later resolved her cases as misdemeanors, released her from custody and terminated those orders. Now, Kim is expected to be arraigned in connection with her husband’s death. Court records allege the weapon used was a flagpole.
