Primary Election Thursday Results: Votes Still Being Counted Across Riverside County
Votes from Tuesday's California Statewide Primary Election are still coming in, and the results could shift significantly as Riverside County officials say they are only about 20% done counting ballots. Here is where things stand this morning.
State Assembly, District 36
Republican incumbent Jeff Gonzalez leads the race with just over 49% of the vote, putting him comfortably ahead of the field. The real contest now is for the second spot on the November ballot, where Indio City Council member Oscar Ortiz and Democrat Ida S. Obeso-Martinez are separated by less than one percentage point. Ortiz holds 21.80% to Obeso-Martinez's 21.62%, making that second slot too close to call with so many ballots still uncounted.
State Assembly, District 47
Republican Greg Wallis leads with 45.30% of the vote, followed by Democrat Leila Namvar at 32.10%. The race for the second November slot remains open as counting continues.
U.S. House, 48th Congressional District
In the newly redrawn 48th District, Republican Jim Desmond leads the field with 36.69% of the vote. Democrat Marni von Wilpert sits in second place with 19.33%, and Republican Kevin Patrick O'Neil trails at 10.88%. Desmond and von Wilpert appear headed toward a November matchup.
Riverside County Supervisor, District 4
Incumbent V. Manuel "Manny" Perez holds a commanding lead with 60.04% of the vote, compared to challenger Steve Sanchez at 39.96%.
California Governor
The governor's race was one of the most closely watched heading into Tuesday, and it remains competitive. Republican Steve Hilton leads with 27.6% of the vote statewide, followed by Democrat Xavier Becerra at 25.5% and Democrat Tom Steyer at 19.7%. California uses a "jungle primary" system, meaning the top two finishers advance to November regardless of party, raising the possibility that Hilton and Becerra could face off in the fall.

A troubling history is coming to light in a Palm Desert husband’s death. 65-year old Vicky Kim is accused in the death of her husband — but prosecutors say she had previously faced several domestic violence cases involving him. The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office says it had secured protective orders against Kim before a judge later resolved her cases as misdemeanors, released her from custody and terminated those orders. Now, Kim is expected to be arraigned in connection with her husband’s death. Court records allege the weapon used was a flagpole.
