Desert Hot Springs Planning Commission Approves Massive Warehouse Project Amid Community Concerns
A proposed one-million-square-foot warehouse is one step closer to becoming reality in Desert Hot Springs after the city’s Planning Commission voted to approve the project, despite concerns raised by residents during the review process.
The industrial development, which would be built on approximately 64 acres along Calle de Los Romos, less than a mile north of Interstate 10, is poised to become one of the largest industrial projects in the city’s history.
Developers say the project will bring significant economic benefits to Desert Hot Springs, including an estimated $10 million to $13 million in permit fees and licensing revenue. To help accommodate increased traffic generated by the facility, project representatives confirmed plans to widen Calle de Los Romos and make additional roadway improvements.
City officials emphasized that the site has long been designated for industrial use and that the proposal aligns with existing zoning regulations.
“This property has been planned for industrial development for years,” city leaders said during discussions surrounding the project. Officials noted that the warehouse proposal is consistent with the city’s long-term land use plans.
However, as the project moved through the approval process, questions began circulating among community members about what the facility could ultimately become.
During Tuesday’s Planning Commission meeting, several residents voiced concerns that the warehouse could eventually be converted into a data center or even an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility.
City leaders sought to address those concerns, stating that neither use would be permitted under the project’s approved plans and zoning requirements.
For many residents, the debate extended beyond the facility’s potential use and focused instead on its impact on the surrounding community. Concerns raised during public comments included increased truck traffic, air quality impacts, noise levels, and the overall scale of the development.
Some community members also questioned the environmental review supporting the project, noting that the analysis relied on studies completed in 2019.
In response, city officials said the project complied with all required environmental review standards and that the Planning Commission carefully considered those findings before casting its vote.
With Planning Commission approval secured, the project is expected to move forward through the next stages of the city’s development process. While supporters point to potential economic growth and infrastructure improvements, opponents say they will continue monitoring the project as it advances.
The development remains one of the most closely watched proposals in Desert Hot Springs, highlighting the ongoing balance between economic development and community concerns.
