Over Four Thousand Rancho Mirage Residents Impacted by Overnight Power Outage Near Frank Sinatra Drive

RANCHO MIRAGE, California — A significant electrical outage left thousands of Coachella Valley residents in the dark after a sudden grid failure knocked out power to a large portion of Rancho Mirage. Southern California Edison reported that the utility disruption began late Tuesday evening, June 9, 2026, at approximately 11:53 p.m., centered primarily around the neighborhood surrounding Frank Sinatra Drive.

According to a representative from Southern California Edison who spoke with City News Service, the midnight blackout was extensive, initially plunging 4,395 residential and commercial customers into complete darkness. Emergency repair crews were immediately dispatched to the area to isolate the failure, examine substation components, and systematically reroute electrical currents.

Through rapid diagnostic work overnight, specialized technicians managed to successfully restore service to the vast majority of those affected within a few hours. By Wednesday afternoon, utility operators had scaled the active outage zone down significantly, leaving approximately 750 customers still waiting for their lights and air conditioning units to click back on.

Company officials initially projected that all remaining properties would have their electricity fully restored by 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, though minor localized complications required continued on-site work by utility personnel through the afternoon hours. The precise underlying cause of the primary equipment failure remains under active investigation by Southern California Edison engineers. Local authorities have advised drivers navigating the Frank Sinatra Drive corridor to exercise caution, as traffic signals in the immediate area may experience temporary disruptions until all regional electrical infrastructure is completely stabilized.
