College of the Desert Expands Free Tuition Program Through Pledge for All Initiative
As college costs continue to rise, College of the Desert is expanding efforts to make higher education more affordable through its Pledge for All program.
The initiative provides free tuition to several groups of students, including returning COD students who have completed 30 or more units, noncredit workforce learners, first responder trainees, military veterans and residents who have earned a high school equivalency certificate.
College representatives say the program is designed to remove financial barriers that often prevent students from pursuing higher education.
"Education is something that nobody can take away from you," said Katie Chartier, who has been meeting with students about the program. "It provides an opportunity for students to come to school debt free and go on to either the workforce or to transfer."
Among those benefiting from the program is Kentrell Hudson, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran studying information technology at College of the Desert.
Hudson said reducing the cost of education can have a significant impact on students and families.
"That would literally help a lot of people because a lot of people really don't come from a lot," Hudson said. "That would really benefit and help people in the long run."
Funding for Pledge for All comes from a combination of state and federal financial aid programs, scholarships and support from the College of the Desert Foundation.

The college hopes the program will continue expanding educational opportunities throughout the Coachella Valley.

Nearly a year after wildfires tore through Mountain Center, the scars are still visible along the Palms to Pines Highway.
