Riverside County Sheriff's Deputy Charged with Manslaughter Following Fatal 100 MPH Crash near Beaumont
RIVERSIDE — A Riverside County Sheriff’s deputy faces multiple criminal charges, including gross vehicular manslaughter, in connection with a high-speed collision that claimed the life of a young motorist and left his fiancée catastrophically injured. The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office announced the official filing of charges against 42-year-old Deputy Glynn Wilburn following an extensive multi-agency investigation into the fatal on-duty crash.
The tragic incident unfolded on the afternoon of September 6, 2025, near the intersection of Cherry Valley Boulevard and Roberts Street, an area bordering Calimesa and Beaumont. Investigators revealed that Deputy Wilburn was operating a sheriff's patrol vehicle and responding with activated emergency lights and sirens to a reported shots-fired call in Calimesa. According to data retrieved by investigators, Wilburn was traveling at speeds of approximately 100 miles per hour down Cherry Valley Boulevard when he entered the intersection and broadsided a Tesla Model 3 at an estimated 71 miles per hour.
The violent impact instantly killed the driver of the Tesla, 21-year-old Cherry Valley resident Gavin Hinkley. His fiancée, 20-year-old Madeline Fox, who was riding as a passenger, suffered severe, life-altering injuries and was rushed to a local trauma unit. Local officials noted the young couple was only weeks away from their wedding day when the crash occurred. Deputy Wilburn, who investigators discovered was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision, was hospitalized with minor injuries.
Prosecutors emphasized that the extreme speed was entirely unnecessary given the status of the emergency. Moments before the catastrophic crash occurred, Sheriff's Department dispatch logs confirmed that there were no reported injuries at the Calimesa shooting scene. Furthermore, the suspect vehicle had already fled the area, and multiple backup deputies had safely arrived on-site before Wilburn initiated his high-speed response.
As a result of the findings, the District Attorney’s Office has formally charged Wilburn with one count of gross vehicular manslaughter and one count of felony reckless driving causing serious injury, alongside a special sentencing enhancement for inflicting great bodily injury. The criminal charges follow a major civil lawsuit filed by the families of the victims against Wilburn and Riverside County. An official arraignment date for the criminal trial has not yet been scheduled by the county court system.
