Palm Springs Celebrates Juneteenth Freedom Weekend with Community Unity Picnic and Youth Pageant
PALM SPRINGS, California — Today marks Juneteenth, the federal holiday commemorating June 19, 1865, when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally learned of their freedom—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was initially issued. Now observed nationwide through educational programs, community events, and cultural expressions, the holiday serves as a vital reminder of historical resilience and the ongoing pursuit of equality. Here in the Coachella Valley, the Palm Springs Black History Committee is leading local commemorations by hosting its annual Juneteenth Freedom Weekend celebration, offering multiple public events to foster community fellowship, education, and reflection.
The local festivities kick off tonight, Friday, June 19, 2026, with the annual Juneteenth Unity Picnic at Downtown Park near Museum Way and Belardo Road. Beginning at 5:00 p.m., this free public gathering will feature live music, family-friendly activities, and local food and drink vendors. Following the picnic, the downtown park space will transition into a live entertainment hub at 7:00 p.m. for a free outdoor community concert featuring an energetic Tina Turner tribute show, welcoming families of all ages to gather with lawn chairs and celebrate together.
The Freedom Weekend celebration will conclude on Saturday evening, June 20, with the annual Juneteenth Youth Pageant at the James O. Jessie Desert Highland Unity Center at 480 Tramview Road. Doors for the pageant open at 5:30 p.m., with admission tickets priced at just $10 at the door. The program is designed to highlight the unique talents, leadership abilities, academic achievements, and cultural pride of local young residents, offering categories for children from pre-school age through high school. Committee leaders emphasize that these weekend events provide both vibrant cultural entertainment and vital education for the broader desert public about the history of Juneteenth and the legacy of Black pioneers who helped shape the Coachella Valley.

A troubling history is coming to light in a Palm Desert husband’s death. 65-year old Vicky Kim is accused in the death of her husband — but prosecutors say she had previously faced several domestic violence cases involving him. The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office says it had secured protective orders against Kim before a judge later resolved her cases as misdemeanors, released her from custody and terminated those orders.
