South Coast AQMD Extends Windblown Dust Advisory for Coachella Valley Through Saturday Morning
PALM DESERT, California — A windblown dust advisory remains in effect for the Coachella Valley through Saturday morning, June 20, 2026, as strong gusts continue to compromise local air quality. The South Coast Air Quality Management District extended the public warning due to an onshore low-pressure system moving across Southern California that is generating fierce winds of up to 55 miles per hour. These intense gusts are picking up loose desert sand and topsoil, creating a significant amount of fine particulate matter pollution that can irritate the eyes and lungs.
Air quality officials report that the elevated dust levels are expected to cause hazardous air quality conditions in specific regional sectors, including northern Cathedral City and the community of Mecca. Other valley municipalities, including Indio, are likewise projected to experience unhealthy air conditions as the blowing dust blankets major travel corridors and residential neighborhoods. The heaviest environmental impacts are anticipated to hit the northwestern portions of the valley and areas near the San Gorgonio Pass, where high winds are naturally funneled into the desert basin.
To mitigate health risks associated with the high particle pollution, public safety leaders are encouraging residents to limit their outdoor activities and take proactive steps to minimize their overall exposure. Individuals with asthma, chronic heart conditions, or other respiratory illnesses, as well as young children and elderly adults, should stay indoors with windows and doors securely closed. Regulators advise running air conditioning or standalone air purifiers while avoiding the use of swamp coolers or whole-house fans that draw outside air directly into the home. Drivers are also reminded to exercise caution and slow down when traveling on dirt roads to prevent adding more dust to the atmosphere. The advisory is scheduled to remain active until eleven o'clock Saturday morning, when the wind speeds are forecast to drop and allow conditions to stabilize.

A troubling history is coming to light in a Palm Desert husband’s death. 65-year old Vicky Kim is accused in the death of her husband — but prosecutors say she had previously faced several domestic violence cases involving him. The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office says it had secured protective orders against Kim before a judge later resolved her cases as misdemeanors, released her from custody and terminated those orders. Now, Kim is expected to be arraigned in connection with her husband’s death. Court records allege the weapon used was a flagpole.
