In fact, the City of Palm Desert holds the historic distinction of being the first municipality in the nation to pioneer a formalized golf cart transportation program specifically designed for public city streets. However, as an increasing number of residents swap traditional automobiles for open-air electric cruisers, local drivers and municipal leaders are issuing a firm reminder to pay close attention to the official rules of the road.
The Post-Pandemic Boom of Desert Golf Carts
The paradigm shift in local commuting patterns found a massive acceleration over the last few years. According to Jason Ware, the owner of local customization outfit Lux Electric Cars, the market for alternative electric vehicles experienced a historic surge that has permanently altered traffic dynamics.

To keep the public safe, city officials are highlighting three foundational guidelines:
Roadway Classifications: Permitted operators must keep their golf carts strictly within authorized Class 3 roadways. Carts are only allowed to drive on streets where the posted speed limits stay under 45 miles per hour.
Legal Operating Hours: For visibility and safety reasons, drivers are only legally permitted to operate their golf carts within a strict daylight window: starting one hour prior to sunrise and concluding no later than one hour after sunset.
Mandatory Code Inspections: Carts cannot simply be driven out of a garage onto public blacktop. The city's Code Compliance division must thoroughly inspect each vehicle to verify essential safety equipment is installed and functioning perfectly—with a primary focus on operational blinkers (turn signals), headlights, and brake lights.

A troubling history is coming to light in a Palm Desert husband’s death. 65-year old Vicky Kim is accused in the death of her husband — but prosecutors say she had previously faced several domestic violence cases involving him.
