PSUSD Young Creators Summer Program Premieres 'Monster Summer' Shorts at Mary Pickford Theater
Student filmmakers are officially taking over the silver screen in the Coachella Valley today, Friday, June 26, 2026. The Palm Springs Unified School District (PSUSD) is hosting the grand premiere of 30 original short films written, directed, and produced entirely by a massive cohort of more than 600 local students.
The exclusive screenings are slated to kick off this morning at 9:00 AM, taking over seven screens simultaneously at the historic Mary Pickford Isense Theatre in Cathedral City. To celebrate the monumental achievements of the young casts and production crews, a star-studded, Hollywood-style red carpet celebration will immediately follow the viewings.
Unleashing a 'Monster Summer'
This year's creative benchmark centers around a thrilling "Monster Summer" theme. The seasonal program targeted elementary and middle school-age youths spanning the fourth through eighth grades, representing every single elementary and middle school across the entire school district.
Instead of merely learning standard media theory, the camp operates exactly like a professional, high-stakes Tinseltown set. The young participants took total command of every critical phase of the cinematic process, working hard to sharpen their talents across multiple hands-on roles:
Pre-Production: Crafting original scripts and visual storyboards centered on classic Hollywood creatures like mummies and vampires.
On-Set Operations: Executing director duties, running camera rigs, managing intricate makeup effects, and handling script supervision.
Post-Production: Arranging clear audio components and editing raw footage into finalized structural narratives.
Building Pipelines to Future Careers
The seasonal initiative was originally founded by veteran local filmmaker and Hollywood director Christian Sesma (Lights Out, Into the Deep) alongside his wife, Program Director Lilly Sesma. Sesma noted that giving young children full creative autonomy to trust their own artistic impulses builds vital life skills that go far beyond the lens.
"We wanted the students to see what it is like to be a part of a high-level filmmaking 101 experience," Sesma explained, highlighting that the camp provides a realistic environment to help build a strong foundation for future technical careers. "We allow the campers to take on every step of the process." The immersive approach is already proving its merit; program organizers proudly shared that a previous student participant was recently cast in a major upcoming commercial motion picture.
A Star-Studded Celebration
While the morning screenings are reserved for the young media creators, their adult supervisors, and proud family members, the red carpet walk will feature an injection of genuine star power. Acclaimed Hollywood actor Sean Patrick Thomas (Save the Last Dance, Barbershop, The Tragedy of Macbeth) is attending the Cathedral City premiere in person to help mentor the youths, critique their visual storytelling, and celebrate their hard work.
The event wraps up a transformative summer session, leaving the valley's young creators well-versed in industry mechanics before they even take their first steps into a high school or college classroom.
