With the Fourth of July holiday bringing one of the busiest travel weekends of the year, many families are packing their bags and heading out on road trips and vacations. While travel can be exciting, it can also bring an unwelcome guest—digestive discomfort.
During this week's Wellness Wednesday, sponsored by Clark's Nutrition Natural Foods Market, nutrition expert Starkey Sours shared practical ways travelers can keep their digestive systems running smoothly while away from home.
One of Starkey's top recommendations is using digestive bitters, which help stimulate digestion and may reduce bloating while supporting healthy bowel function. Although the taste can be surprisingly strong, he says the benefits are worth it for many travelers.
For those who frequently experience traveler's diarrhea, Starkey recommends taking a probiotic containing Lactobacillus reuteri before and during a trip. He says the beneficial bacteria can help support a healthy digestive system and may begin working within a few hours.
Another travel-friendly option is digestive enzymes, which can help the body break down food more efficiently, especially when indulging in rich vacation meals or trying unfamiliar cuisine.
When it comes to healthy snacks, Starkey advises choosing fruits that can be peeled, such as bananas or oranges, rather than fruits with edible skins that may not have been washed thoroughly while traveling. It's a simple way to reduce exposure to unwanted bacteria.
Finally, he reminds travelers not to overlook one of the simplest wellness habits—staying hydrated. Summer temperatures and long hours on the road can quickly lead to dehydration, making water one of the most important travel essentials.

A troubling history is coming to light in a Palm Desert husband’s death. 65-year old Vicky Kim is accused in the death of her husband — but prosecutors say she had previously faced several domestic violence cases involving him. The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office says it had secured protective orders against Kim before a judge later resolved her cases as misdemeanors, released her from custody and terminated those orders.
