Talking with Thalia: Summer Fun In Palm Springs
While temperatures continue to climb across the Coachella Valley, the City of Palm Springs is reminding residents that summer is one of its busiest seasons for recreation.
Nicholas Gonzalez, Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Palm Springs, says the department offers a wide range of activities to keep children, adults, and seniors active while providing safe, air-conditioned spaces to escape the heat.
More than 200 children are participating in the city's summer camp program, which runs through the end of the season. Community centers and local parks also host a variety of recreational activities designed to keep kids engaged and off their electronic devices during summer break.
For those looking to cool off, the Palm Springs Swim Center offers public swim days, lap swimming, and a new Splashball program that introduces children to water polo in a fun and beginner-friendly environment.
Gonzalez says the city's recreational facilities aren't just about entertainment—they're designed to build community by creating opportunities for people to connect with friends, family, and neighbors in welcoming spaces.
Older adults are also encouraged to participate. The city's Senior Center at Sunrise Park offers activities throughout the week, including new adult programming in partnership with local organizations to promote social interaction and reduce isolation.

Nearly a year after wildfires tore through Mountain Center, the scars are still visible along the Palms to Pines Highway. Now, fire crews are working to repair those burn areas and reduce the risk of flooding, erosion and mudslides when heavy rain arrives. The work includes fire-line suppression repairs, water bars and other measures designed to slow rainwater and keep burned soil from washing away.
