Food Now Volunteers Power Coachella Valley's Largest Food Pantry
Behind every bag of groceries distributed at Food Now in Desert Hot Springs is a team of dedicated volunteers working to serve families across the Coachella Valley.
As the region's largest food pantry, Food Now provides assistance to more than 650 families every week. While clients may first notice the shelves stocked with food, it's the volunteers behind the scenes who keep the operation running day after day.
For many visitors, Maria Costa is the first friendly face they see. After suffering a leg injury that left her searching for purpose, Costa found a new beginning through volunteering at Food Now. Four years later, she continues welcoming families with a smile, saying the experience has brought joy to both her and the people she serves.
Among the pantry's longest-serving volunteers is 92-year-old Rosie Hargent, who has dedicated two decades to Food Now. Having raised six children and helped care for two brothers-in-law, Hargent says she understands the challenges many families face and is proud to help those in need.
The next generation of volunteers is also stepping up. Desert Hot Springs High School student Julia Aller volunteers weekly through her school's Rotary Club, packing food boxes and giving back to the organization that helped her own family during a difficult time when her father was hospitalized.
Not all volunteers work on the distribution line. Andrew Minko supports Food Now by maintaining its website, producing newsletters, and keeping its technology running smoothly. He says volunteering has become a meaningful way to strengthen the community he calls home.
From greeting clients to organizing food and supporting operations behind the scenes, Food Now's volunteers make it possible for hundreds of local families to receive nutritious meals each week.

A troubling history is coming to light in a Palm Desert husband’s death. 65-year old Vicky Kim is accused in the death of her husband — but prosecutors say she had previously faced several domestic violence cases involving him. The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office says it had secured protective orders against Kim before a judge later resolved her cases as misdemeanors, released her from custody and terminated those orders. Now, Kim is expected to be arraigned in connection with her husband’s death. Court records allege the weapon used was a flagpole.
