Palm Springs Unified Superintendent Reflects on First Year and Vision for the Future
One year ago, Dr. Marcus Funches stepped into the role of Superintendent of Palm Springs Unified School District with a simple goal: making sure every student feels seen, heard, and connected.
Now, after his first year leading the district, Funches says the focus has been on listening, building relationships, and understanding the needs of students, families, and staff.
For Dr. Funches, the first year was not about changing the district overnight. Instead, he spent time visiting schools, meeting with students and families, and learning what makes the district unique.
“We want to make sure that we have a strong culture and organizational excellence,” Funches said. “That means everyone in this district is working toward the betterment of our young people.”
One of his priorities has been making sure students feel valued and supported both inside and outside the classroom.
That mission is reflected in programs like the Wellness Center at Palm Springs High School, where students can access therapists, counselors, and other resources when they need emotional support.
“If a scholar shows up on our campus needing any type of emotional support, they can come in here and get the support of a therapist, a professional they can talk to, a counselor, and receive real-time resources,” Funches said.
The district has also expanded opportunities for students through career-focused programs, including an aviation pathway created through a partnership with the Palm Springs Air Museum. Students are exploring careers such as pilots, air traffic controllers, and aviation mechanics.
Looking ahead, Dr. Funches says the district’s next chapter will focus on Vision 2031, a five-year roadmap designed to prepare students for life beyond graduation.
He says the goal is to help students discover their passions and connect their talents with future opportunities.
“Every young person has a gift and they have this creativity,” Funches said. “But we won’t know what that gift is if we don’t ask and if we don’t listen.”
As he begins his second year, Funches says the work continues with a focus on creating a stronger sense of belonging and connection for every student in Palm Springs Unified.

Nearly a year after wildfires tore through Mountain Center, the scars are still visible along the Palms to Pines Highway. Now, fire crews are working to repair those burn areas and reduce the risk of flooding, erosion and mudslides when heavy rain arrives.
