Phoenix Fire Department Uses Ice Water Immersion Bags to Treat Heat-Related Illness
As temperatures continue to climb this summer, the Phoenix Fire Department is using a specialized tool to help treat patients suffering from heat-related illnesses.
The department is one of only a few fire agencies in the United States using water immersion bags as part of its emergency response. During a heat-related call, firefighters place the patient inside the bag, fill it with ice and water, and continue the cooling process while transporting the patient for additional medical care.
Fire officials say the goal is to lower a patient's body temperature as quickly as possible, especially in cases involving heat stroke, which can become life-threatening without immediate treatment.
Phoenix Fire says it has used the immersion bags more than 40 times this season and reports the tool has had a positive impact, helping provide rapid cooling during extreme heat emergencies.
Health experts remind people to take precautions during hot weather, including drinking plenty of fluids, avoiding prolonged outdoor activity during peak heat hours, and recognizing warning signs of heat illness such as confusion, dizziness, or loss of consciousness.

A troubling history is coming to light in a Palm Desert husband’s death. 65-year old Vicky Kim is accused in the death of her husband — but prosecutors say she had previously faced several domestic violence cases involving him. The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office says it had secured protective orders against Kim before a judge later resolved her cases as misdemeanors, released her from custody and terminated those orders. Now, Kim is expected to be arraigned in connection with her husband’s death. Court records allege the weapon used was a flagpole.
