Former Indian Wells Mayor Richard Oliphant Dies at 92
Former Indian Wells mayor, developer and philanthropist Richard Oliphant has died at the age of 92.
Oliphant leaves behind a lasting legacy across the Coachella Valley through projects that helped transform the region into a world-renowned destination for sports, recreation and tourism.
Among his most recognizable contributions were the development of the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, home of the BNP Paribas Open, the Indian Wells Golf Resort and the Classic Club golf course.
His impact on the valley's growth and visibility earned him a star on the Palm Springs Walk of the Stars.
Oliphant and his family also played a significant role in bringing the California State University, San Bernardino Palm Desert Campus to the Coachella Valley, expanding access to higher education opportunities for local students.
Beyond development and philanthropy, Oliphant dedicated decades of service to public safety. He served as Indian Wells' first fire chief and volunteered with the department for more than 30 years.
Earlier this year, city officials announced plans to rename an Indian Wells fire station in his honor in recognition of his service to the community.
Community leaders say Oliphant's vision and leadership helped shape modern-day Indian Wells and left an imprint that will be felt across the Coachella Valley for generations to come.

A troubling history is coming to light in a Palm Desert husband’s death. 65-year old Vicky Kim is accused in the death of her husband — but prosecutors say she had previously faced several domestic violence cases involving him. The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office says it had secured protective orders against Kim before a judge later resolved her cases as misdemeanors, released her from custody and terminated those orders. Now, Kim is expected to be arraigned in connection with her husband’s death. Court records allege the weapon used was a flagpole.
