Local Mechanics Urge Drivers to Prepare Vehicles for Desert Heat
Millions of Americans are expected to travel by car this summer, but the desert heat can be tough on both vehicles and drivers' wallets.
At J&E Automotive, mechanics say they see the same issues every summer as temperatures climb across the Coachella Valley.
According to technicians, air conditioning systems, batteries and coolant levels are among the most common trouble spots during the hottest months of the year.
Mechanic Jose Beltran, who has worked in the auto repair industry for more than three decades, says high temperatures place additional stress on vehicles and can accelerate wear and tear on key components.
Experts also recommend checking tire pressure regularly, as heat can cause air pressure to fluctuate and increase the risk of tire problems.
With AAA forecasting tens of millions of Americans will travel by car this summer, mechanics say scheduling inspections early can help drivers avoid expensive repairs and roadside breakdowns.
Preventative maintenance, including inspecting belts, batteries, cooling systems and air conditioning components, can often identify issues before they become major problems.
As temperatures continue climbing across the desert, local mechanics say one simple step can make all the difference:

Nearly a year after wildfires tore through Mountain Center, the scars are still visible along the Palms to Pines Highway. Now, fire crews are working to repair those burn areas and reduce the risk of flooding, erosion and mudslides when heavy rain arrives. The work includes fire-line suppression repairs, water bars and other measures designed to slow rainwater and keep burned soil from washing away.
