Chief Andy Mills announces retirement after 5 years leading Palm Springs Police
Palm Springs Police Chief Andy Mills has announced he will retire on September 5, bringing an end to a 48-year career in law enforcement, including 5 years leading the Palm Springs Police Department.
Mills shared the news Thursday morning in a Facebook post, saying he had notified the Palm Springs city manager and city council of his decision.
"After 48 years of policing, 13 as chief of police, it's time to hang up my leather gear," Mills wrote.
He described Palm Springs as "the crown jewel" of his career and thanked the community for its support throughout his time as chief.
"I cannot adequately express what an honor it has been to lead the men and women of policing and serve this amazing community," Mills said.
Mills also thanked his wife, Cathy, who he said has been by his side through every challenge and success during his career. He added that she is retiring as well.
"The department is ready to move forward with the mission," Mills wrote. "They are committed to supporting and serving a wonderful community that cares about people, supports one another and wants great public safety. The team is 100% ready."
Following their retirement, Andy and Cathy Mills plan to relocate to the Sacramento area to be closer to his mother.
While he did not announce what comes next, Mills said he and his wife are not finished serving others.
"I don't know what the next chapter is, but I can guarantee you that Cathy and I are not done making a difference," he wrote. "Serving you has been an honor and a privilege."
Mills has served as Palm Springs police chief since 2021 and has been widely recognized for his leadership in community policing, public safety initiatives, and strengthening relationships between the department and the community. City officials are expected to begin the process of selecting his successor ahead of his September 5 retirement.
