Shark Tank-Inspired Nonprofit Competition Returns to Coachella Valley
A Shark Tank-inspired competition is returning to the Coachella Valley this fall, giving local nonprofits a chance to compete for thousands of dollars to support their missions.
The NPO Desert Fast Pitch grand finale is scheduled for Oct. 1 at Agua Caliente Casinos. Six finalists will take the stage and deliver three-minute pitches before a live audience of more than 300 people.
The top nonprofit will receive a $20,000 grand prize, while second and third place will receive $15,000 and $10,000, respectively.
The 11 participating nonprofits go through a six- to eight-week training program before competing in a semifinal event, where six finalists are selected for the grand finale.
Among this year's finalists is Jessica Bowser, founder of the Desi Strong Foundation, which supports local families dealing with pediatric cancer.
Because the Coachella Valley does not have children's hospitals, families often have to travel outside the area for treatment. The foundation helps families with expenses including gas, food, travel and bills. It also provides a therapy doll designed to help children cope with changes to their bodies during cancer treatment.
Bowser said the competition has been nerve-wracking but sees the experience as an opportunity to grow professionally, raise awareness for the foundation and potentially secure funding to continue helping local children and families.
Organizers say the event is designed not only to award funding but also to give nonprofit leaders a platform to share their missions with the community.
NPO Centric Director Tali Fantini said the competition has become a popular annual event in the Coachella Valley and showcases nonprofit leaders who are working to make a difference across the region.
The event also highlights what organizers describe as the strength and future of the Coachella Valley by bringing nonprofits, supporters and community members together for one night.
