Palm Springs Fire Chief Paul Alvarado Announces Retirement After 35-Year Career
Palm Springs Fire Chief Paul Alvarado has announced his retirement, effective November 2, 2026, bringing a 35-year career in fire service to a close.
Alvarado has led the Palm Springs Fire Department for the past three and a half years, overseeing changes to staffing, emergency response capabilities, fire prevention and long-term planning.
During his tenure, the department reached its highest staffing level in history, with 87 firefighters and four-person staffing on all fire apparatus. The department also improved its Insurance Services Office Public Protection Classification from Class 3 to Class 2, reflecting improvements in fire protection capabilities.
Other accomplishments include securing approval for a new Fire Station 1, acquiring two new fire engines and ordering four additional engines and a ladder truck. Alvarado also led development of the city's first wildfire mitigation plan and expanded fire prevention and community risk reduction efforts.
His tenure included responses to major emergencies, including Tropical Storm Hilary in 2023 and the May 2025 bombing at the American Reproductive Centers fertility clinic.
City Manager Scott Stiles praised Alvarado's service, saying his leadership strengthened the department through investments in firefighters, public safety and future planning.
“Serving as Fire Chief of Palm Springs has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career, and I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished together,” Alvarado said.
Before joining Palm Springs in 2023, Alvarado served with the Long Beach Fire Department, gaining experience in fire suppression, emergency operations and organizational leadership.
The city expects to announce an internal acting fire chief within the next week to support the leadership transition and maintain continuity of emergency services.
