Mann On The Aisle
A Campy Summer Escape: Prism Theater’s “Book of Merman” Delivers Big Laughs in a Tiny Venue
If you're looking for a fun way to escape the summer heat, Kevin Mann says Prism Theater's Book of Merman might be just the ticket. Playing at the intimate Prism Theater in downtown Palm Springs, this off-Broadway comedy takes the wildly successful Book of Mormon and flips it completely on its head. Instead of finding spiritual enlightenment, two young Mormon missionaries find themselves face-to-face with none other than Broadway legend Ethel Merman—or at least someone who claims to be her.
The setup is as ridiculous as it sounds, and that's exactly the point. The tiny black-box theater, which seats only about 50 to 60 people, creates an up-close-and-personal experience that works perfectly for the show's over-the-top humor, musical parodies, and nonstop double entendres. According to Kevin, the cast throws themselves into the silliness with impressive enthusiasm and talent.
Ryan Avoux shines as Elder Braithwaite, bringing both strong vocals and excellent comedic timing. Jared Ryan Kaitz delivers an equally memorable performance as Elder Shumway, a missionary whose Broadway dreams may be bigger than his religious calling. Their chemistry helps drive the show and keeps the laughs coming.
Then there's Mallory Kerwin as Ethel Merman. Kevin describes her performance as boisterous, outrageous, hilarious, and absolutely unforgettable. With a booming voice, sharp wit, and just the right amount of chaos, she is comedic and singing gold.
Director Lance Phillips makes excellent use of the small space, encouraging audience interaction and creating the kind of quirky, off-Broadway atmosphere that theater lovers don't often get to experience outside New York City. While Kevin noted a few minor sound issues during the performance he attended, he says they were easily overshadowed by the energy and professionalism of the cast.
Bottom line? Book of Merman is campy, silly, and unapologetically ridiculous. It won't be everyone's cup of tea, but if you enjoy musical comedy, Broadway references, and a healthy dose of absurdity, Kevin says this show is a must-see summer treat.

With El Niño conditions expected to bring periods of heavy rain, officials say preparing now could help protect homes and communities from the aftermath of wildfire.
