Manny the Movie Guy Reviews The Smashing Machine, Bone Lake, and Taylor Swift’s New Film
Manny the Movie Guy is back with this week’s reviews, and he’s got something for everyone — action, horror, and music.
First up is The Smashing Machine, starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as MMA fighter Mark Kerr. Based on the 2002 documentary of the same name, the film follows the fighter’s rise, fall, and eventual redemption. Directed by Benny Safdie, the film aims to capture the heart of a man battling demons inside and outside the ring. Emily Blunt co-stars as Kerr’s ex-wife, but this is Johnson’s show. Manny says prosthetics and a full head of hair can’t hide The Rock’s passion, calling his performance “quite smashing.” The Smashing Machine earns three out of four “smash this” kisses.
Also out is Bone Lake, a bloody blend of horror and comedy directed by Mercedes Bryce Morgan. The story centers on a couple’s romantic getaway gone wrong when they are forced to share their Airbnb with another mysterious couple. What unfolds is a twisted, sexy, and terrifying survival story. Manny calls it “terrifying, thought-provoking, and unpredictable.” Bone Lake earns three and a half out of four kisses and is his Pick of the Week.
And finally, Taylor Swift is ready to rule the box office. Her new theatrical event, The Life of a Showgirl, gives fans exclusive behind-the-scenes footage, music videos, and lyrics tied to her 12th studio album. Swifties can expect a front-row cinematic celebration of her artistry.
Manny the Movie Guy says whether you’re into action, horror, or music, this weekend has something for you at the movies.
