Argentina rallies past England, reaches World Cup final
Argentina is headed to the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final after a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over England.
England appeared on course for its first World Cup Final appearance since 1966 before Argentina mounted a late rally. Enzo Fernandez scored the equalizer before Lautaro Martinez netted the winning goal, completing the comeback and sending the defending champions back to the title match.
Lionel Messi played a pivotal role in the victory, recording assists on both Argentine goals. The performance came in Messi's first-ever match against England during his international career. He also remains tied with France's Kylian Mbappe for the tournament lead with eight goals.
Argentina will face Spain in Sunday's World Cup Final in New Jersey as it seeks to win back-to-back FIFA World Cup titles.
For England, the loss extends its decades-long wait to return to a World Cup championship match, with players and fans left heartbroken after coming within minutes of advancing.
