England, Argentina Set for High-Stakes World Cup Semifinal Showdown
England and Argentina will renew one of international soccer's greatest rivalries when they meet in the FIFA World Cup semifinal, with the winner advancing to face Spain in Sunday's championship match.
The matchup marks the first time Lionel Messi has faced England in his international career. The 39-year-old Argentine star enters the semifinal in outstanding form after scoring eight goals during the tournament and leading the defending champions back to the final four.
England, managed by Thomas Tuchel, has relied on a disciplined defensive approach and timely goals from stars Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham to reach the semifinals. Tuchel acknowledged the challenge of containing Messi, calling him a player who can change a match in an instant.
Argentina, led by coach Lionel Scaloni, has also overcome several difficult knockout matches on its path to the semifinals. The defending World Cup champions have leaned on their experience and Messi's leadership while scoring a tournament-best 17 goals.
The rivalry between England and Argentina is among the most historic in international soccer, featuring memorable World Cup meetings dating back decades, including Diego Maradona's famous "Hand of God" goal in 1986 and England's victory in the 2002 World Cup.
With emotions expected to run high both on and off the field, officials in Atlanta have increased security around the match. Authorities say additional personnel will be deployed, and fans from each nation will enter the stadium through separate entrances.
The winner will advance to Sunday's World Cup final against Spain, which secured its place by defeating France in the first semifinal.
