Legendary Coach, Hall Of Fame TE, Mike Ditka dies at age 86

Mike Ditka, the fiery Hall of Fame tight end who became an iconic head coach and led the Chicago Bears to their only Super Bowl championship, has died at the age of 86.

Ditka’s family announced his passing Friday, October 9, remembering him not only as a football legend, but as a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend. A cause of death was not immediately announced

Selected fifth overall by the Bears in the 1961 NFL Draft, Ditka quickly established himself as one of the league’s premier tight ends. He earned NFL Rookie of the Year honors after recording 56 receptions for 1,076 yards and 12 touchdowns in his first season.

He played six seasons in Chicago before stints with the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys. During his career, Ditka won an NFL championship with the Bears in 1963 and captured a Super Bowl title with Dallas in Super Bowl VI.

After leaving the Bears, Ditka coached the New Orleans Saints before stepping away from coaching in 1999. He remained a familiar presence in the football world through television appearances, interviews and his continued connection to the game.

His place in NFL history was especially rare: Ditka won championships as a player, an assistant coach and a head coach.

For generations of Bears fans, he represented more than a championship. He embodied Chicago’s blue-collar football identity — tough, outspoken and unapologetically himself.

Mike Ditka leaves behind a legacy defined by championships, a Hall of Fame career and a personality that was impossible to ignore. For Chicago and the NFL, “Da Coach” will forever be remembered as one of football’s most enduring figures.

In 1988, he became the first tight end inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, cementing his place among the game’s greats.

Ditka’s legacy reached another level when he returned to Chicago as head coach in 1982.

He led the Bears to seven playoff appearances in 11 seasons, but his defining achievement came during the 1985 campaign. Chicago went 15-1 during the regular season before dominating the New England Patriots 46-10 in Super Bowl XX.

With a ferocious defense, a colorful cast of personalities and Ditka leading the way, the Bears became one of the most memorable teams in NFL history.

The championship made Ditka a Chicago sports icon and delivered the franchise its only Super Bowl victory. His coaching style was intense, emotional and often confrontational, but his teams played with the toughness that became synonymous with his name.
