Trabajadores de saneamiento en San Diego se mantienen en huelga desde el año pasado
Luego de tomar un pequeño descanso para pasar tiempo junto a sus familias en Año Nuevo, los trabajadores de saneamiento regresaron a su huelga el pasado domingo.
Se trata del decimoséptimo día de protestas por parte de miembros del sindicato Teamsters 542, quienes declararon huelga a la empresa Republic Services.
“Chula Vista es un cochinero actualmente”, dijo el trabajador, Ladere Hampton.
Hampton no se visualizaba empezando el año en huelga y sin trabajo.
“Si manejas por Chula Vista y ves los contenedores de basura llenos, sabes que estamos listos para regresar a trabajar”, dijo Hampton.
El es uno de los más de 200 trabajadores de saneamiento del área de San Diego que reanudaron su protesta el día de hoy a las 4 a.m.
El grupo que se encuentra en Chula Vista montó algunas carpas a las afueras de la planta de Republic Services, ubicada en Energy Way.

Hampton agregó que estarán protestando día y noche sin descanso hasta que les sea ofrecido un mejor contrato, que incluya un mejor horario, mayor paga y un mejor equipo de seguridad para los empleados.
“Hay muchas veces que ellos (Republic Services) hablan de lo mucho que nos aprecian, pero ese parece no ser el caso, porque llevamos mucho tiempo aquí afuera protestando”, añadió Hampton.
La última reunión entre el sindicato y la compañía fue el jueves, durante la cual ambas partes no lograron llegar a un acuerdo.
Por su parte, Republic Services informó que su cuadrilla de emergencia está progresando en su recolección de basura, la cual ha llenado los contenedores del área durante las últimas semanas.

Arlyn Angulo dijo que el basurero en su complejo de departamentos en Chula Vista, fue vaciado luego de acumular deshechos por más de dos semanas.
“Me sentí aliviada, ya era mucha la basura que terminaba en la calle al desbordarse el contenedor por el viento y la lluvia”, dijo Angulo.
Las negociaciones entre Republic Services y el sindicato se reanudarán este martes por la mañana, mientras vecinos como Arlyn, apoyan a los trabajadores y esperan que la situación se resuelva pronto.
“Que esté limpio es mi mayor preocupación. Tenemos un parque y una comunidad muy familiar aquí, que disfruta de pasear por el parque y las calles limpias”, agregó.

Los servicios de reciclaje y recolección de desechos de jardinería aún se mantienen pausados. La ciudad de Chula Vista informó a la población que pueden acudir a tirar su material reciclable, deshechos de jardinería y árboles de navidad de manera gratuita en el relleno sanitario de Otay.
