Smart Home, Dumb Investment?
In this week’s Property Perspectives, real estate expert Sari explores whether smart home features actually add value to your property.
Smart thermostats, lights, and voice-controlled assistants like Alexa have become must-have modern conveniences. But when it comes to home value, they may not make the impact homeowners expect.
“Smart tech definitely attracts younger buyers who like convenience and innovation,” Sari explains. “But unless the system is built-in or part of a high-end package, it’s often seen as a perk — not a price booster.”
While smart homes can stand out in listings or impress during showings, most buyers view these features as bonuses rather than essentials. They may enhance daily living, but rarely influence appraisals or asking prices.
“Smart homes are cool,” Sari says with a laugh, “but don’t expect a big bump in value just because Alexa lives there.”
So for now, these upgrades might make life easier — but when it’s time to sell, the return could be more about lifestyle appeal than market value.
