Blowing Winds Close Roads in Palm Springs as City Moves Forward with $2.2M Wind Wall Project
High winds across the Coachella Valley are not only fueling fire concerns near Thermal and Stagecoach but are also causing ongoing disruptions for drivers in Palm Springs. Two major roads—North Gene Autry Trail and North Indian Canyon—have been shut down for more than 24 hours due to dangerously low visibility and blowing sand.
City officials say these closures are part of a recurring problem that has plagued the area for years. As a solution, the Palm Springs City Council just approved a major step forward: a $2.2 million contract to construct a permanent wind wall along Gene Autry Trail.
“Every time, yeah, we need to do something,” said Mark Ware, a frequent visitor to the area who’s grown frustrated with the closures. “As long as we can move the traffic, I think it’s a good idea.”
Twelve years ago, the city attempted to minimize the sand and visibility issues by installing a temporary wooden barrier. While helpful, it often required maintenance and failed to prevent full road closures during major wind events.
The new wind wall, which will stand at 14.5 feet high, will span from East Via Escuela to the Union Pacific Railroad Bridge—replacing the existing wood panel system. It’s being funded by Measure A and awarded to contractor Dirk E&C, Inc. Construction is expected to take about 120 days, or roughly six months.
Until the wall is completed, however, closures may continue when conditions like this morning’s arise—complicating commutes and firefighting efforts alike.

Palm Springs firefighters responded Thursday to a report of a person struck by lightning in the Chino Canyon area. The person was transported to a hospital for medical treatment. Firefighters also responded to a palm tree fire in Chino Canyon that officials say was caused by an apparent lightning strike.
