Palm Springs Fire Department Launches Annual Wildfire Prevention with Major Brush Clearing
With summer temperatures on the rise and fire risks following suit, the Palm Springs Fire Department is ramping up its annual wildfire prevention campaign. This year’s efforts are already underway, with crews beginning to clear 87 acres of brush in some of the city’s most vulnerable areas. The initiative kicks off in the Little Tuscany neighborhood—a region with a history of wildfire activity—before expanding to other high-risk zones throughout Palm Springs.
Over the coming months, fire crews will be busy trimming trees and removing dry, flammable vegetation that could serve as fuel for wildfires. The goal is to reduce the risk of fast-moving blazes that threaten homes, wildlife, and the broader community. Officials stress that these proactive measures are crucial as increasingly hot and dry conditions settle over the Coachella Valley.
The fire department is also calling on residents, especially those living on the west and south sides of the valley, to take action on their own properties. Homeowners are urged to clear brush, trim overgrown trees, and remove debris from around their homes to create defensible space—a key factor in preventing the spread of wildfire.
“Community involvement is essential in keeping Palm Springs safe,” said a department spokesperson. “By working together, we can significantly lower the risk of devastating fires this season.”

Palm Springs firefighters responded Thursday to a report of a person struck by lightning in the Chino Canyon area. The person was transported to a hospital for medical treatment. Firefighters also responded to a palm tree fire in Chino Canyon that officials say was caused by an apparent lightning strike.
