American Stars Shine at BNP Paribas Open as Gauff, Keys Advance
The BNP Paribas Open kicked off its second week with standout performances from American players at Indian Wells. Madison Keys battled past Elise Mertens in a grueling three-set match, securing her spot in the round of 16. Keys dominated early with a set and 3-0 lead, but Mertens saved four match points before the fifth-seeded American closed it out 6-4 after nearly three hours on the court.
“It was definitely kind of frustrating out there today,” Keys admitted. “Lots of ups and downs, but to be able to figure that out and get the win is all it takes sometimes.”
Coco Gauff, looking to regain momentum after early exits in Dubai and Doha, claimed a confidence-boosting victory over last year’s finalist, Maria Sakkari. The 20-year-old U.S. Open champion sealed a 6-2 second-set win on her sixth match point.
“Today was tough conditions,” Gauff said. “It was a bit windy, so we were both trying to adjust. But, you know, I thought I played a great match.”
On the men’s side, Jenson Brooksby fell to Britain’s Jack Draper, who delivered an impressive performance to advance to the round of 16 for the second time.

Palm Springs is mourning the loss of beloved entertainer James “Gypsy” Haake, who has died at 94. Haake began his entertainment career at just 19 years old as a Broadway chorus dancer. After retiring from the stage, he returned to performing at 82, becoming the host of Carnival Cabaret at Oscars in downtown Palm Springs. A longtime friend of our station, Haake was a familiar and beloved figure in the Palm Springs entertainment community — and his contributions were recognized with a star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars.
