Coachella Valley Firebirds Secure Home Ice Advantage with Comeback Victory Over San Diego
The Coachella Valley Firebirds hit the road earlier today with a major mission: securing home-ice advantage for the fast-approaching Calder Cup playoffs. In a high-stakes battle against the San Diego Gulls, the Firebirds delivered a gritty 6-4 victory, officially locking in a home-ice start for the first round of the postseason. . The game did not begin in the Firebirds' favor, as the team quickly found themselves in a 2-0 hole early in the contest. However, the momentum shifted with roughly two minutes remaining in the first period when Eduard Sale found the back of the net to put Coachella Valley on the board. The birds carried that energy into the second period, where Jacob Melanson made an immediate impact by tying the game at 2-2. . The Firebirds’ offense continued to surge midway through the game. Cooper Marodi fired one in from between the circles to give Coachella Valley the lead, followed by a powerful rocket from the right circle by defenseman Ty Nelson. These goals marked four unanswered scores for the Firebirds, highlighting the team’s depth and ability to respond under pressure. . While San Diego managed to claw back and tie the game at 4-4, the Firebirds remained composed in the final minutes. With just over a minute left in the third period, Logan Morrison scored the go-ahead goal to give Coachella Valley the lead. Jacob Melanson then sealed the victory with an empty-netter in the final moments, finishing the game with a 6-4 scoreline and securing the vital home-ice advantage. . The Firebirds are now set to face the Bakersfield Condors in the opening round of the playoffs. Fans have one more chance to catch the team in regular-season action tomorrow for Fan Appreciation Night at Acrisure Arena. The final regular-season game against the Abbotsford Canucks is scheduled for a 3 p.m. puck drop, marking the end of a historic regular season before the playoff journey begins.
