Series Tied: Coachella Valley Firebirds Return Home for Game 3 After Hard-Fought Split in Ontario
ONTARIO, CA — It was never going to be easy. After a dominant opening win in the Pacific Division Semifinals, the Coachella Valley Firebirds faced a reality check Friday night at Toyota Arena, falling to the Ontario Reign 5-1. The result sends the series back to the Coachella Valley tied at one game apiece.
While the final score looked lopsided, the game was a razor-thin 2-1 battle entering the third period. The Firebirds struck first when Lleyton Roed found the back of the net in the opening frame, silencing the Ontario crowd early. However, the Reign—who finished the season in first place with 99 points—showed exactly why they earned that first-round bye.
The Momentum Shift
The Reign leveled the score at 1-1 before taking their first lead of the series late in the second period. It marked the first time the Firebirds had trailed in a game in over a week, dating back to their series opener against Bakersfield.
A combination of sloppy play in the defensive zone to start the third period and an empty-net goal late allowed the game to slip away. Despite several power-play opportunities, the Firebirds’ special teams couldn't find the spark needed to mount a comeback.
Coach’s Perspective
Head coach Derek Laxdal acknowledged that the heavy schedule may have finally played a factor. The Firebirds have played five games in the last eight nights across two different series.
"We were sitting good at 1-0 and we made a couple mistakes," Laxdal said following the loss. "They hemmed us in and they stung us. We played three in four nights against Bakersfield and then two here in the last three nights. I think it caught up just a little bit. Now we can get some rest and get ready for Game 3."
Coming Home for Cinco de Mayo
The silver lining for the Firebirds is that they have successfully "stolen" home-ice advantage. The series now transforms into a best-of-three, with the next two games taking place at Acrisure Arena.
Game 3 is set for Tuesday night, May 5. The team is calling it the "biggest Cinco de Mayo party in the Coachella Valley," with tickets starting at just $23 and no additional fees when purchased at the Acrisure Arena box office.
With the series tied and the season on the line, the Firebirds are looking to "pack the barn" and use the home-crowd energy to reclaim the series lead.
