Firebirds Stay Alive with Dominant 6-2 Win, Game 5 Watch Party Set for Rancho Mirage
The Coachella Valley Firebirds delivered a season-saving performance Thursday night, defeating the Ontario Reign 6-2 in an elimination game at Acrisure Arena. Backed by an energized home crowd, the Firebirds overcame an early deficit and stormed back with four unanswered goals to force another game in the playoff series.
Ontario struck first, silencing the arena early and putting pressure on the Firebirds in a must-win situation. However, Coachella Valley quickly responded with relentless offensive pressure and strong teamwork that shifted momentum for the remainder of the night.
The Firebirds tied the game thanks to a crucial playoff goal by J.R. Avon— the player’s fourth of the postseason — before defenseman Kaden Hammell added another memorable moment by scoring his first-ever playoff goal. By the third period, Coachella Valley had taken full control of the matchup.
Although the Reign managed to score midway through the final period, the Firebirds answered with two more goals to seal the convincing 6-2 victory and extend their playoff run.
After the game, veteran defenseman Gustav Olofsson spoke about the team’s mindset entering the elimination matchup.
“The message was to come out strong and continue that effort,” Olofsson said. “Even with a lead, we didn’t want to sit back. We wanted to continue to push. When you’re desperate, that kind of happens, and I think the guys did a good job of doing what was needed. Now we earned another day.”
With the series now heading back to Ontario for Game 5, Firebirds fans who can’t make the road trip will still have an opportunity to experience the playoff atmosphere locally.
The team is hosting an official Game 5 watch party Friday night at Burgers and Beer in Rancho Mirage. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., just 30 minutes before puck drop at 6 p.m. Fans can expect giveaways, appearances from team mascot Fuego, and a high-energy environment to cheer on the Firebirds together.
Senior Vice President of the Coachella Valley Firebirds and Acrisure Arena, John Page, encouraged the community to continue supporting the team during its playoff push.
“It’s gonna be fun. It’s what it’s all about,” Page said. “If you can’t be there in person, do whatever you can to support the fans with your friends and family. It’s gonna be great. It’ll be epic — another chance for the Firebirds to shine and get it done.”
With momentum now on their side, the Firebirds will look to carry their strong performance into Ontario as they continue fighting to keep their championship hopes alive.
