Coachella Valley Firebirds Eliminated From Playoffs Following Heartbreaking 3-2 Loss

FIREBIRDS CALDER CUP RUN ENDS IN LOVELAND

The Coachella Valley Firebirds’ quest for a 2026 Calder Cup championship came to a sudden and heartbreaking end on Wednesday night at Blue Arena. The Firebirds, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Seattle Kraken, surrendered a two-goal lead to the Colorado Eagles in Game 4 of their best-of-five third-round series, falling by a final score of 3-2. The defeat officially seals the series victory for Colorado, eliminating Coachella Valley from postseason contention.

Early on, it appeared the Firebirds were poised to force a decisive Game 5. Forward Jagger Firkus opened the scoring at the 4:13 mark of the first period, drilling a wrist shot from the slot to give Coachella Valley an initial 1-0 advantage. The momentum extended early into the middle frame when defenseman Ville Ottavainen launched a heavy shot through traffic from the blue line, beating Eagles netminder Trent Miner to double the Firebirds' lead just 2:30 into the second period.

SECOND PERIOD COLLAPSE DOOMS COACHELLA VALLEY

With a comfortable 2-0 lead, the Firebirds succumbed to a furious, unanswered offensive onslaught from the host Eagles. Colorado flipped the script entirely during a brutal five-minute-and-eight-second stretch midway through the second period, scoring three consecutive goals to hijack the lead. Bryan Yoon ignited the comeback with a deflected shot from the point, followed swiftly by a power-play equalizer from Tristen Nielsen. Gavin Brindley then delivered the decisive blow, slicing through the circle to bury a one-timer past Firebirds goaltender Nikke Kokko to make it 3-2.

Coachella Valley struggled to mount a sustained counter-attack in the final frame. The Eagles’ stingy defense held the Firebirds to just nine shots in the third period, all of which were turned aside by Miner to secure the home-ice victory. Colorado finished the evening outshooting the Firebirds 26-25, while also holding the advantage in special teams play. The Firebirds' power-play unit finished a quiet 0-for-1, and their penalty-killing unit surrendered one goal on two opportunities.

The victory punches the Colorado Eagles’ ticket to the Western Conference Finals for the first time in their franchise history, where they will advance to face the winner of the Central Division battle between the Chicago Wolves and the Grand Rapids Griffins.

Nearly a year after wildfires tore through Mountain Center, the scars are still visible along the Palms to Pines Highway. Now, fire crews are working to repair those burn areas and reduce the risk of flooding, erosion and mudslides when heavy rain arrives. The work includes fire-line suppression repairs, water bars and other measures designed to slow rainwater and keep burned soil from washing away. CAL FIRE Riverside County Battalion Chief Ryan Lubin says the steep terrain, dry brush and limited access continue to create challenges for mountain communities. With El Niño conditions expected to bring periods of heavy rain, officials say preparing now could help protect homes and communities from the aftermath of wildfire. The message from firefighters: preparation can save lives.
