CATHEDRAL CITY, California — Although the action on the ice has wrapped up for the season, the Coachella Valley Firebirds are continuing their extensive community outreach programs across the desert. The American Hockey League organization recently hosted a special floor hockey clinic and career forum for the sports leadership program at Nellie N. Coffman Middle School in Cathedral City, rewarding local students for their hard work throughout the academic year.
During the campus event, students split their time between learning the fundamentals of the game and competing against one another in an interactive floor hockey tournament. Following the athletic matchups, the students participated in an intimate question-and-answer forum with prominent television personality Gino Lamont and the official radio voice of the Firebirds, Evan Pivnick. The two professional broadcasters shared detailed insights regarding their respective career paths, offering advice on public speaking, sports journalism, and the dedication required to secure a position in professional sports media.
Campus instructors noted that the event served as a major end-of-year reward for a select group of students enrolled in the specialized sports leadership class. Throughout the semester, curriculum leaders have utilized hockey to teach essential life skills, including a comprehensive unit on the goalie mindset that featured classroom presentations on legendary NHL goaltenders Grant Fuhr and Joey Daccord. Team executives emphasized that developing regional youth programs and fostering personal leadership will remain a top operational priority for the Firebirds organization during the summer off-season.

Palm Springs is mourning the loss of beloved entertainer James “Gypsy” Haake, who has died at 94. Haake began his entertainment career at just 19 years old as a Broadway chorus dancer.
