Egypt makes history with first World Cup knockout win after penalty shootout victory over Australia
Egypt has made World Cup history by advancing to the Round of 16 after a dramatic penalty shootout win over Australia in a tightly contested knockout match that finished 1-1 after extra time.
Egypt struck first in the 13th minute when Emam Ashour rose above the defense to head home a powerful opening goal. Australia responded in the 55th minute when a set-piece delivery deflected off Mohamed Hany for an own goal, leveling the match.
Both teams created chances in a tense second half and extra time, but neither side could find a winner. Australia goalkeeper Patrick Beach produced a standout late save to push a potential stoppage-time winner over the bar, keeping the match level and forcing penalties.
In the shootout, Egypt gained an early advantage after converting its opening attempts while Australia missed key chances, including a shot that struck the crossbar. Mohamed Salah calmly converted his penalty to keep Egypt ahead before Hossam Abdelmaguid sealed the victory with a composed finish into the bottom corner.
The win secures Egypt’s first-ever World Cup knockout-stage victory and sends the team into the Round of 16 in dramatic fashion after a tightly fought match decided from the penalty spot.
