Palm Desert Swim Club Searching for Future Talent at August Tryouts
In a sport where every fraction of a second can make the difference between victory and defeat, the Palm Desert Swim Club is helping young athletes chase their biggest goals in the pool.
As the only competitive swim program in the Coachella Valley, the club trains swimmers between the ages of 6 and 16, providing them with the opportunity to compete at a high level while developing the skills needed to succeed both in and out of the water.
Head coach Mavi Sampaio says the program's mission goes beyond winning races. The long-term goal is to develop the next generation of Olympic-caliber athletes by building strong fundamentals, discipline, and confidence from a young age.
That vision is already taking shape with swimmers like 12-year-old Siena Colb, who has competed at sectional meets against some of the top young swimmers in the region. For Colb, qualifying for the Olympics isn't just a dream—it's a goal she's determined to achieve.
Now, the Palm Desert Swim Club is hoping to discover its next wave of talent. The club will host tryouts on August 15, welcoming young swimmers interested in taking their abilities to the next level.
Sampaio says swimming offers much more than competition. Beyond keeping kids active during the summer, the sport teaches discipline, perseverance, accountability, and time management—life lessons that extend far beyond the pool. With another season on the horizon, the Palm Desert Swim Club hopes more local families will take the plunge and become part of the valley's growing swimming community.

A troubling history is coming to light in a Palm Desert husband’s death. 65-year old Vicky Kim is accused in the death of her husband — but prosecutors say she had previously faced several domestic violence cases involving him. The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office says it had secured protective orders against Kim before a judge later resolved her cases as misdemeanors, released her from custody and terminated those orders. Now, Kim is expected to be arraigned in connection with her husband’s death. Court records allege the weapon used was a flagpole.
