Friday Night Lights Return to the Coachella Valley as Local Teams Open 2026 Season
Friday Night Lights are officially back in the Coachella Valley, as local high school football teams opened their 2026 seasons with plenty of excitement, new faces and early-season lessons.
For the Shadow Hills Knights, Friday night marked the beginning of a new era. The Knights introduced first-year head coach Nicholas King in their home opener against Esperanza.
Coming off a 6-6 season, King emphasized the importance of setting the tone immediately.
“I really want them really just playing hard and playing physical,” King said before the game.
Shadow Hills' defense delivered early, coming up with several key stops against Esperanza. However, the Knights struggled to find their rhythm offensively.
Starting quarterback Jesse Rodriguez provided a few strong runs, but Shadow Hills could not sustain its offensive momentum. Esperanza eventually took control, turning defensive success into points and defeating the Knights 24-0.
While Shadow Hills begins the King era with a loss, the Knights have plenty of football ahead of them to find their identity.
Across the valley, the Indio Rajahs made one of the biggest statements of opening night.
Indio welcomed new head coach James Dockery and immediately showed a different level of physicality, particularly on defense.
The Rajahs, who won just one game last season, were aggressive on all three levels of the defense. That defensive pressure helped create opportunities for the offense as Indio dominated San Bernardino 53-6 at home.
For the Cathedral City Lions, however, the season opener brought a frustrating result.
After finishing 4-6 last season and winning just two league games, Cathedral City struggled to find consistency against Santa Rosa Academy. The Lions gave up several big plays defensively while the offense had difficulty generating momentum.
Santa Rosa Academy went on to defeat Cathedral City 21-6.
Despite the loss, head coach Richard Lee believes his young team will improve as the season progresses.
“We just gotta keep grinding and keep going ahead,” Lee said. “We're going to improve every week.”
Lee acknowledged that mistakes were expected in the opening game, especially with a young roster that includes players who are new to football.
For the Lions, the goal now is to clean up those mistakes and continue developing. Cathedral City's next opportunity comes next week on the road against San Bernardino.
Other Coachella Valley teams were also in action.
Palm Springs fell on the road to Hemet 37-6, while Palm Desert picked up a strong road victory over Brawley 24-16.
Rancho Mirage defeated Yucca Valley 19-7, and Desert Hot Springs earned a road win over Tahquitz 17-9.
It was an action-packed opening week across the valley, but the best part for local football fans is that the 2026 season is only getting started.
Next week, NBC Palm Springs Sports will also debut the NBC Top 3, giving fans the opportunity to vote for the top three plays of the week. The player with the No. 1 play will take home a $250 cash prize, sponsored by Honda of the Desert.
After a full night of Friday Night Lights, the Coachella Valley now turns its attention to Week 2.
