Empty Nest, New Beginning: Coping When Your Child Leaves Home
When children leave home, parents may experience a complex mix of pride, joy, grief, loneliness, anxiety, and even a shift in identity. Clinical psychologist Susan Albers of Cleveland Clinic explains that these feelings are a normal part of adjusting to a quieter home and a new routine. Parents can ease the transition by maintaining regular contact with their children while giving them space to grow, developing hobbies and relationships outside of parenting, and building confidence in their child’s ability to navigate this new stage of life. If difficult emotions persist for several weeks, seeking support from a mental health professional can help. The empty nest can be viewed not as an ending, but as a new beginning for both parents and children.
