From fast food counters to concession stands, the question arises: how much, if anything, should we tip for various levels of service? Fred Roggin tackled this controversial topic with input from Alison Krupp, VP of Marketing and Communications at The Living Desert, and Vince, founder of Renova Energy. Alison shared her perspective, saying, “I’m a big tipper, but only when I receive good service. It’s not something that’s automatically expected, but I do believe in rewarding someone for their effort and courtesy.” Vince agreed but added a qualifier: “Those who don’t tip have never worked in the service industry. I stick with 20% for good service, but for minimal interaction, like at a checkout line, I might go as low as 10%.” The debate heated up when Fred posed a common dilemma: Should you tip when someone simply hands you a bag of food or a hot dog at a concession stand? Vince firmly said no, while Alison countered with, “I think tipping is a sign of class. Even if the service is minimal, I was raised to show respect and gratitude.” The takeaway? Tipping remains a personal choice, often influenced by one’s background and perception of respect for service workers. Tom Whitney Shines at American Express Golf Tournament in La Quinta In La Quinta, local hero Tom Whitney is making waves at the American Express Golf Tournament. The PGA Tour rookie, a graduate of La Quinta High School and former Air Force officer, had an impressive showing, shooting six under par and finishing tied for 23rd after the first round. Whitney’s journey to the PGA Tour is nothing short of remarkable. After graduating from the Air Force Academy, he served as a nuclear missile operator before pursuing his professional golf dreams. Reflecting on his performance, Whitney shared, “There were a couple of nerves, but it feels good to be back. Playing at home adds pressure, but it’s also a privilege.” Whitney’s local ties and military background have made him a standout story in this year’s tournament. As he continues his rookie season, all eyes will be on this hometown talent. Good Neighbors in Coachella Valley: Community Concerns and Contributions What does it mean to be a good neighbor? In the Coachella Valley, residents are sharing their stories of community spirit and collaboration. In Thousand Palms, Francis is calling for cleanup efforts in the ponds and waterways of Tri Palms Estates, where debris has been a persistent issue. Meanwhile, in Cathedral City, neighbors are concerned about mysterious loud booms echoing through the cove area. Despite contacting the police, residents have yet to uncover the source of the noise. Over in Palm Desert, complaints about the constant smell of marijuana have sparked debates about neighborhood etiquette, while Erica in Rancho Mirage is urging the community to donate used cars to the Coachella Valley Repertory Theater to help sustain their programs. These stories highlight the importance of community engagement and remind us that being a good neighbor can take many forms, from lending an ear to organizing cleanup efforts or supporting local arts organizations.
