The Coachella Valley Unified School District (CVUSD) continues to face mounting concerns about leadership, financial accountability, and internal transparency.
This week, attention turned to Superintendent Dr. Francis Esparza, who is not only named in a current lawsuit filed by CVUSD teachers’ union president Carissa Carrera—alleging harassment and retaliation—but is also facing similar allegations from her time as superintendent at El Rancho Unified School District.
In that earlier case, filed by former El Rancho Chief Business Officer Alejandro Rojas, the claims include whistleblower retaliation and harassment. Rojas stated in court documents that after warning Dr. Esparza that hiring a special manager for a construction project would push it over budget, he was placed on administrative leave. A judge has allowed that case to proceed, citing sufficient evidence presented.
Back in CVUSD, Esparza and several board members are now being sued personally. Critics question why the district would hire a superintendent already embroiled in litigation and now facing nearly identical allegations once again.
This all follows the district’s controversial handling of funds meant for its nonprofit foundation. Officials initially claimed no funds had been touched—but public records revealed $12,000 had been used.
As the legal and financial scrutiny deepens, the community is left wondering: how long can this leadership continue without meaningful change?
