Highway 74 has long been considered one of the most scenic drives in Southern California—but also one of the most dangerous, especially when it comes to sharing the narrow, winding road with large commercial trucks.
This week, renewed urgency followed a video showing a big rig pulling out in front of a school bus full of children. While the moment may appear tame on video, critics say it highlights a growing concern on a road that was never meant for such heavy traffic.
Assemblyman Jeff Gonzalez is taking action, calling for state-level regulations to ban oversized trucks from the highway. “We’ve talked about the dangers on this road for years,” said Gonzalez. “It's time for real change.”
The trucking industry, however, is expected to push back. Highway 74 is a major shortcut for routes between San Diego and the Coachella Valley—and for many logistics companies, time saved is money earned. Opponents of the ban argue that rerouting would cost time and fuel.
NBC Palm Springs contributors Brad Ward and Tammy Bleck weighed in during a recent segment.
“Safety over profits any day,” said Ward. “You can replace money, but you can’t replace a life.”
Bleck added, “It’s not that truckers are the bad guys—it’s the industry trying to save money by taking the shortest route. But what is a life worth? We have other highways and freeways. Yes, they take longer, but this isn’t about convenience. It’s about safety.”
Ward pointed out that statistical significance for change usually begins at three recorded incidents. “Three is too many,” he said.
Bleck was more direct: “One should be enough. But in today’s world, it feels like profits come first and people second.”
As safety advocates continue to call for reform, Gonzalez's proposal may mark the beginning of serious legislative attention on Highway 74. For many in the Coachella Valley, the message is clear: the risk isn’t worth the shortcut.
