Sometimes, amidst the hard truths and sharp commentary, we’re reminded of the humanity behind the headlines. That’s the case today as we take a moment to extend heartfelt condolences to Coachella Mayor Steve Hernandez and his family on the passing of his brother, Jason Hernandez.
If you’ve watched the Roggin Report, you know we don’t shy away from holding local officials accountable. Steve Hernandez, like many others, has been on the receiving end of our critiques — sometimes harshly. But credit where it’s due: Steve understands the role we play. He gets that watchdog journalism matters. And even when the spotlight is uncomfortable, he continues to engage, knowing our shared goal is truth and transparency.
What many may not know is the deeper connection. Over time, Steve has shared parts of his personal life with us — including the heartbreaking news of his brother’s diagnosis. Jason Hernandez, who passed away this week at just 43, was not only brilliant — managing 30 engineers at Entra Solutions Group — but also deeply compassionate. He was a man of faith, a mentor to youth, a loving husband to his wife Beatrice, and a steadfast example of kindness and principle.
Jason once said, “I lived a short but bountiful life. A full life. Well-loved, well-lived, and well-blessed.” It’s a sentiment that speaks to his enduring spirit — and the impact he made in just four decades.
Mayor Hernandez, from all of us: We may debate politics and policy, but when it comes to family, we stand united. Our thoughts are with you and your entire family as you grieve the loss of someone so beloved.
