Recent footage showed a truck drifting dangerously across the center line. While there was no crash, Roggin emphasized how easily that could have changed. Assemblyman Jeff Gonzalez is working to push forward legislation to keep big rigs off the narrow, winding highway.
Roggin then turned his focus to Coachella politics, raising questions about potential conflicts of interest. Mayor Steven Hernandez, Councilmember Stephanie Virgen, and Palm Springs Councilmember Grace Garner are all on the paid staff of Riverside County Supervisor Manny Perez. Roggin asked, "Who do they really answer to—their city, or the county?"
The segment then shifted to the rising heat and the impact on the region’s unhoused population. In San Jose, some unhoused individuals declined housing, choosing to remain on the streets. The city is now weighing arrests, prompting a heated debate between contributors Brian Harnick and Tammy Blatt. Harnick argued against criminalizing homelessness, citing systemic failures. Blatt called for holistic economic solutions that address housing, hygiene, and access to jobs. Roggin concluded, “You can’t help people who don’t want help—but we’ve got to fix that.”
From homelessness to household discipline, Roggin also tackled the topic of spanking. With 19 U.S. states still allowing corporal punishment in schools—and 56% of adults supporting it—opinions varied. Blatt opposed it, favoring modern alternatives like timeouts and chores. Harnick defended mild, situational discipline within families, noting the line between firm parenting and abuse.
Roggin wrapped up with this week’s Good Neighbor requests: Carol in La Quinta is looking for a reliable smog check. Shonda in Thousand Palms needs someone to sew a pillowcase. Barbara in Palm Desert is shopping for a lightweight electric scooter. Melissa in Palm Springs is searching for a roller-skating club for women over 40. And Patricia in Rancho Mirage is in need of an affordable electrician to install a split unit.
